According to The Wall Street Journal, early Tuesday morning several armed fast boats affiliated with Iran approached a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and ordered the vessel to stop—an action seen amid escalating tensions and as the United States bolsters its military presence in the region. According to a maritime security company, six fast boats equipped with heavy weapons approached the tanker as it entered the strategic waterway and demanded that it shut down the engine and prepare for inspection. The tanker, however, increased speed and left the area, and an hour later it was escorted by a U.S. warship. U.S. officials have confirmed that the armed Iranian boats attempted to stop the vessel and that the ship was ultimately guided to a safe route under military escort.
